World-famous Lidar Expert prof. George Vosselman visited CASM

From Nov. 22 to 28th, 2012, the world-famous lidar expert Prof. George Vosselman, from the Earth Observation and Earth Sciences Institute of Twente Univ. visited CASM for lecturing and academic exchange by invitation. Vice Pres. of CASM Prof. Yan Qin presided over the lecturing.
Prof. Vosselman detailed the LiDAR data processing methods such as point cloud data organization, segmentation, classification, reconstruction of building 3D models from airborne laser scanning data, terrestrial/mobile laser scanning data processing, assessment of data quality, monitoring the changes of city buildings using point cloud etc. in his lectures. In addition, he also introduced the progress of Microsoft Kinect Device in carrying out the indoor mapping. More than 30 researchers, graduate students from CASM, Earth Observation Center of CAS, Inst. of RS Applications of CAS, China Univ. of Geosciences, China Univ. of Mining and Technology, Capital Normal Univ., Beijing Construction Engineering College etc attended the lectures and made a deep exchange with Vosselman. Prof. Vosselman’s lectures were systematic and in-depth, warmly welcomed by the participants. All of the participants regarded that they learned a lot from the lectures.
During his visiting, Prof. Vosselman also learned about the progress and advancement, made by CASM in airborne/mobile laser scanning, aerial photography and geographical conditions monitoring. He also visited the Beijing Four Dimensional Information Technology Co. Ltd, learned about the SSW Mobile Laser Scanning Measurement System, and discussed the cooperation in the area of laser scanning in future.
In 2012, CASM focused on strengthening the contacts and exchanges with world-famous scientists. As a result, Prof. Peter J.G. Teunissen from Curtin Univ. of Technology in Australia, Prof. Armin Gruen from Zurich Inst. of Technology, Prof. Lu Zhong from the United States Geological Survey, and Prof. George Vosselman were invited to visit CASM and give lectures. The above exchanges not only broaden the international perspectives of the researchers in the Academy, but also promoted the advancements of CASM in these fields. The above exchanges were helpful to the Academy to achieve the goal of building the internationally renowned research institute.
